John P. Davis Memorial Recognition Resolution of 2005 Honors His Career and Accomplishments
Washington, D.C. (May 15, 2005) The Council of the District of Columbia adopted the John P Davis Memorial Recognition Resolution of 2005 to honor Davis's career and accomplishments. John P. Davis had a very illustrious career and we wanted to acknowledge and support him for his contributions to our country, said Michelle DeMond Davis, Chairman of the John P. Davis Collection. Davis, a Harvard-trained lawyer and activist intellectual became prominent for his work with the Joint Committee on National Recovery and the founding of the National Negro Congress in 1935. He went on to found Our World magazine in 1946, a full-size, nationally-distributed magazine edited for African American readers. He also published the American Negro Reference book covering virtually every aspect of African-American life, present and past.
The John Preston Davis Collection was founded in September 2004 by Michelle DeMond Davis. The Collection seeks to collect, preserve, and promote the use of materials bearing on the history of Africa, Brazil and people of African and Brazilian descent.
